Are You A Doubting Thomas?
By Mark Flippo
John 20:24-31 (NIV)
24-Now Thomas (also known as Didymus), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came.
25-So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!”
But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.”
26-A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!”
27-Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.”
28-Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!”
29-Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
It is the easy path to not believe God's Truth. You just blend in with the crowd. That way no one will know your a Christian. If it was only so easy to see His hands and side. We have believed when there was nothing to hold onto. It takes a good backbone to stand up for what is right when it can be somewhat lonely. My wife and I have had times where we were not very popular because we listened to Jesus telling us to reexamine what we understood of Him. It was harsh! We were very shocked and humbled by what He showed us. Our hearts were in the right place but we believed all we had been taught!
To examine yourself is very painful because you have to let go of things that were not correct in your understanding.
We desperately desired from the depths of our hearts to have a solid foundation that would stand the tests that are being thrown at it. There are many that we are not welcome around any more but we love them just the same. Follow Jesus and no matter what, if you are doing it right the outcome will be blessed by His Mighty Hands.
